Wacom announces the Intuos5 tablet

Wacom recently came out with the new Intuos5 and I upgraded to one recently. It’s very similar to the Intuos4 which is a good thing. The big feature they added is that the surface is now touch sensitive just like the Bamboo line has been for a while. I’m already using this feature quite a bit and have reduced trips between my tablet and my trackball.

The new ExpressKeys don’t show an LCD display as the previous version did, With the new version you now get blank buttons that feature a touch sensitive option, as soon as you touch them you get a heads up display on your screen which tells you what each button has been programmed to do. A nice change although it’s taking me some time to get used to it.

Other than that the finish is now a more matte/rubberized plastic and now you can also have the tablet be wireless (RF, not Bluetooth) if you add the $39 wireless kit. I’ve ordered one so I’ll update this post after I’ve had a chance to use it. Overall a nice update to the Intuos line.

Starting a little series of “iPhonography” vignettes from my daily life here in the blog. This one is about the Seabus here in Vancouver. One of the three ways you can go between downtown Vancouver and North Vancouver. Some days it’s a great way to slow down and just enjoy the 15 minute crossing.

Canon 5D Mark III announced

Just read about the new 5D that was announced and I’m not sure yet what I think about it. Here’s a quick take on the features that jumped at me the most from the specs:

Positives

Dual memory card – Finally available on the 5D line. You get an SD slot and a CF slot. (I wish they were both CF though).
6 frames per second – Great if you need them.
Video at 720p / 60fps – Nice feature to shoot slow motion video.

“Huh?” / Fluff

Price $3,500 usd. – Ouch. High for what the upgrade offers
1 extra megapixel on the sensor – Sounds like nothing but Canon says the difference will be noticed in the cleanliness of the images. This in turn gets you better noise reduction. I’ll guess we’ll have to see real world tests in a month.
Silent shutter mode – Umm, ok I guess for the 2% of photographers that might need it (more like 1%)

Well I guess I’m not super excited about it and it could be that the hype on this camera was too high, but if you look at it as an upgrade to someone like me who has a Mark II, I think it’s not that big of a deal. Again I’ll reserve my final opinion to next month when we start seeing real world samples.

After a long break I’m happy to announce that my site has a new look and a better way to show you my work. I think the new look will help you find my photographs much easier and it tells a bit of a story about each project I’ve worked on. Please take a look around and send me any feedback you may have or if something needs attention. There may be a bit of fine tuning in the next couple of days but it’s full speed ahead.

I’m a light Twitter user so I won’t bombard you with a lot of stuff, I mostly talk about photography, inspirational ideas I find plus some nerdy stuff I enjoy. Check it out if you can. Shooting @ ICBIC. International biochemistry conference

A couple of weeks ago I had a chance to work again with a great client of mine shooting an international conference of biochemists. It all happened at the UBC campus during 3 sunny days.

Capturing the conference where people are moving and talking in rooms that are not lit too bright was quite the challenge and I had to pull all the tricks in the book to get enough light and sharpness.

My client and I were really happy with the images we got (which by the way was in the 2000+ frame count). Great vibe all around. Biochemists rock!

Astonishing images in “Timescapes”

I found this site while checking some of my favourite blogs and was blown away by the beautiful images these guys create. After looking at the results they get I can see why it takes them so much time and effort to get the shots they do.

I’m totally inspired so I might try this some day. Even if it’s the simple stuff where you point your camera up at the sky. The images will be shown in a DVD that will be on sale soon. I’m getting it for sure.

Back from a summer break

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post so I thought I’d just confirm that yes, I took some time off to relax and enjoy the sun which we really needed to see here in Vancouver after the gray spring we had. I have some cool posts ready to go in the queue including a camera clip that’s just awesome, a must have gadget for the Wacom tablet and shots from some of the shoots I’ve done recently. More soon!
